Parties agree on federal citizenship certificate

REPUBLICA
KATHMANDU, Nov 3: The political parties have agreed in principle to put a provision on new constitution to authorize the federal government to issue citizenship certificate to all Nepali citizens with the provincial identity during a meeting of the high level taskforce at Singha Durbar on Wednesday.

“We have agreed in principle to authrize federal government to issue citizenship certificate with provincial identification,” Upendra Yadav, the chairman of the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF), said after the meeting.

Madhesh-based parties had demanded dual citizenship certificate - issued by the central government and provincial government. The leaders also agreed to sort out remaining issues of the citizenship certificate once the state restructuring committee finalizes the division and rights of the provinces.

All the members of the taskforce formed to sort out the contentious issues on the draft of the constitution were present during the 45-minute meeting.
