Peace Minister hints at UNMIN term extension

RSS

NUWAKOT: Minister for Peace and Reconstruction, Rakam Chemjong said on Saturday that the United Nations political mission in Nepal (UNMIN), cannot return until the Maoist combatants are managed, which means that UNMIN's term would be extended.

Talking to journalists in Syafrubesi, Rasuwa district, today, Minister Chemjong said it would be risky to tell UNMIN to return until peace is established in the country by taking the peace process to logical conclusion.

He also said the peace process would not reach conclusion without the rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.

Stating the Maoists should be flexible and serious for reestablishing peace in the country, the Minister for Peace said the problem has arisen as the Maoist still harbours militaristic thinking.

Minister Chemjong said the government is committed to reconstructing the infrastructures damaged during the conflict period, providing relief to the conflict victims and building peace.
