Deuba camp opposes Koirala's move

KATHMANDU: Sher Bahadur Deuba camp today objected to the proposal of Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala tabled at the Central Working Committee meeting, in which he nominated two office-bearers.

After Koirala proposed Ram Chandra Paudel as vice-president and Krishna Prasad Sitaula as general secretary, Deuba camp’s CWC members put two conditions before approving the nominations. They said consensus should be reached on the process of endorsing the proposal, as the party’s statute was not clear about it, and there should be a package deal with the Deuba camp on nominations and formation of departments, committees and parliamentary board.

The Deuba-led group that holds sway on 45 per cent seats in the CWC has been demanding ‘respectable’ share in nominations and other appointments in the party.

The party president will propose the names of the three office-bearers — vice-president, general secretary and joint general secretary — for nomination and the CWC has to elect them according to the party’s statute.

The two rival camps of the party described the statutory provision in their own ways, as the party is yet to define the process of nomination in its regulation. Koirala and a few of his supporters said once the party president tabled the proposal, the CWC should endorse it. On the other hand, Deuba’s supporters said the proposal should be put to vote.

Sushil Koirala told the meeting that there was no need to discuss the proposal, as it was the duty of the CWC to endorse the proposal brought by the party president.

What has made matters worse for Koirala is that his supporters Arjun Narsingh KC, Dr Ram

Sharan Mahat and Sujata Koirala don’t seem to back Koirala’s

proposal. KC and Mahat, aspirants for general secretary’s

post, and Sujata Koirala, who was eyeing vice president’s post, are miffed at Koirala.

Sujata Koirala openly challenged the party president for not proposing her as vice president. “You, including other leaders, had promised to nominate me for the post of vice president while asking me to withdraw from general secretary’s post during the national general convention. How can I trust you now? I will not support your proposal,” said Sujata Koirala at today’s meeting, according to sources. She said the proposal should be put to vote.

Only 10 CWC members spoke at today’s meeting. Dip Kumar Upadhaya, Dilendra Prasad Badhu and Ananda Prasad Dhungana supported Koirala, while Purna Bahadur Khadka, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, Dr Minendra Rijal, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki objected to Koirala’s proposal. Arjun Prasad Joshi neither supported nor opposed Koirala’s proposal.
