Maharjan wins bronze medal for Nepal in Asiad

Maharhan has become the first Nepali boxer to win a medal in the Asiad after two decades.

KATHMANDU: Nepal entered its name in the medal tally of the ongoing 16th Asian Games on Wednesday with Nepali boxer Deepak Maharjan winning a bronze medal.

Maharjan won the medal in the men’s 81kg boxing event after losing the semi-final bout to India's Dinesh Kumar 7-1 this afternoon.

Maharjan secured the single point in the third round only while his opponent secured two, three and two points in the first, second and third rounds respectively.

To make it to the semi-finals, he had cruised past Thailand champion Kriangkai Sukkhum 4-0 in the quarter-final bout and secured a medal.

Maharhan has become the first Nepali boxer to win a medal in the Asiad after two decades.

Chitra Bahadur Gurung had brought home a bronze from the 11th Asian Games held in Beijing, China in 1990.

It is Nepal's sixth Asiad medal in boxing.

Dal Bahadur Rana Magar, Tul Bahadur Thapa, Sushil Pokharel and Manoj Bahadur Shrestha had claimed bronze in the 10th Asian Games held in Seoul, South Korea in 1986.
