Home ministry directs police to keep an eye on casino tycoonThe Ministry of Home Affairs (MoFA) has directed police to keep an eye on a casino tycoon

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoFA) has directed police to keep an eye on a casino tycoon and prevent him from leaving the country.

The casino tycoon, Rakesh Wadhwa, who is an Indian national and chief of Nepal Recreation Centre (NRC), owes some Rs 200 million as royalty and taxes to the government. He is also charged of breaching the law by admitting Nepali nationals illegally in his five casinos - Casino Nepal in Hotel Soaltee, Casino Anna in Hotel Annapurna, Casino Shangrila in Hotel Shangrila, Casino Everest in Hotel Everest, and Casino Tara at Hotel Hyatt - which NRC operates in the capital.

NRC has not paid at least Rs 200 million royalties, required to be paid for operating the casinos, to the government.

The move comes amid police crackdown on casinos for admitting Nepali citizens to gamble, which is illegal in Nepal. The law allows the eight hotels which operate casinos to only allow foreign clients.

Police have filed cases against five general managers of the casinos for entertaining Nepalese clients. nepalnews.com
