KATHMANDU: Finally, the wait is over. The country today received its first consignment of Machine Readable Passports, however, in much depleted size than actually ‘promised’ by Oberthur Technologies, the French firm authorised to print and supply the smart passports.
A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said some 3,000 sets of MRPs arrived today and added that by next week, the ministry will receive the smart passports in sufficient number. Out of total MRPs received today, 2,000 are specimens while rest are of diplomatic, official and general categories.
As per a deal reached between MoFA and Oberthur, the latter was to supply 400,000 sets of MRPs, including 10,000 diplomatic, 15,000 special ones and 25 travel documents, within 70 days from the date of signing of the contract.
The 70-day deadline though expired about two weeks ago. MoFA officials, however, reconfirmed that a sizeable consignment will arrive within five days. “We have received a token consignment of MRPs today,” said Chief of Passport Division Bharat Paudel.
