KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is going to insure working journalists soon.

FNJ central committee meeting held a few days back passed the Journalist Welfare Scheme which contained Working journalists’ insurance.

Dharmandra Jha, president of FNJ said, “The scheme has a provision for working journalists’ health and accident insurance.” Under the scheme, FNJ will insure every journalist who is a member of the organisation and FNJ will pay the annual premium. The insurance amount and other details will be finalised in the next meeting, Jha stated.

The scheme also talks about providing certain amount as relief support if a journalist is sacked from the organisation against the Working Journalists’ Act. Jha said, “In such cases, FNJ will seek legal remedies for journalists and certain amount will also be given until they get a new job.”

He further said the meeting also passed Procedure Directives for New Membership and Renewal. As per the directive, any district, regional and central level member of political parties or their sister organisations will not be given FNJ membership. Likewise, the meeting also decided that all FNJ branches should renew their membership before December 24.

The meeting decided to hold the FNJ’s Twenty-third Convention on World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on May 3.

A three-member taskforce has been formed under the coordination of Govinda Acharya, vice president, FNJ, to study complains regarding membership. The other two members are Posan KC, general secretary and Pramod Dahal, central member, FNJ.

FNJ is also going to call International Media Mission to do a thorough study on frequent threats, intimidation, assault, abuse and murder of journalists for writing news.
