KATHMANDU: Top leaders of the major three parties--UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN UML-- failed to reach any agreement on the new budget and appointments to be made in various constitutional bodies.
A joint meeting that took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar Wednesday could not make any headway in that direction after the parties stuck to their earlier stances.
At the meeting, UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ stressed on the need of government formation first to clear the way for introduction of the full-fledged fiscal budget and appointments in the various constitutional bodies.
Dahal also said his party would have no objection to a UML-NC government given consensus is all too unlikely to materialise in the present scenerio.
Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel reiterated his party’s earlier stance that parties should strike a package deal to resolve the prolonging political stalemate.
On the occasion, Minister for Finance Surendra Pandey drew the meeting’s attention towards a more critical economic crisis the country is likely to plunge into with the delay in introducing the budget.
The meeting was to convene on Tuesday and was deferred due to unavailability of the NC top brass. Also present in today's meeting was UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal.
