Metropolitan Traffic Division extends time for digital plate phase-out

he Metropolitan Traffic Division (MTD) on Tuesday said it has extended the time to replace digital number plates in vehicles including motorcycles by non-digital until the end of Falgun.

"We have not suspended or withdrawn the initiative," MTD spokesperson SP Jagat Man Shrestha told Nepalnews, "I want to make it clear that we have just decided to extend the timeline unlike what media reports have appeared."

According to Shrestha, the division felt pressure from the common people who complained that they have been unjustly fined for using digital plates in their vehicles and motorcycles without the prior notice." This is why we decided to extend the timeline."

SP Shrestha also ruled out pressure from the Ministry of Home Affairs to suspend the process. "So far, the ministry has not inquired anything on the process from the division," he added.

The Division launched the drive against the digital number plates citing complaints from traffic police officials that such plates are difficult to notice at night and are not as easy to read from a certain distance as the manually painted plates. nepalnews.com
