KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress today expressed its willingness to give a nod to the idea of a government on rotational basis.
However, the main opposition rejected the request of the ruling CPN-UML to join the Jhala Nath Khanal-led government until an agreement is signed, replacing the seven-point pact reached between the UCPN-Maoist and the UML.
UML leaders including former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary Ishwor Pokharel and senior leaders KP Oli and Bam Dev Gautam held three-hour talks with Congress senior leaders at the residence of UML former parliament member Krishna Lal Maharjan in Lalitpur.
The Congress team, led by party president Sushil Koirala and leaders Ram Chandra Paudel, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Bimalendra Nidhi and Krishna Prasad Sitaula asked the UML leaders to come up with a detailed plan on the rotational system, according to sources.
“Even if an agreement is not reached, the Congress will play a supportive role for the completion of peace and constitution-writing processes,” a participant at the meeting quoted the Congress leaders as saying. Congress leader Paudel said, “We cannot participate in the government till the seven-point is in place.” Congress leader Nidhi said the two parties today agreed to join hands for peace and constitution-drafting processes. UML general-secretary Pokharel said, “We have initiated talks with Nepali Congress. We will consult UCPN-M tomorrow.”
