Over 1‚000 held in Holi crackdown

KATHMANDU: Police today arrested more than 1,000 Holi revellers, mostly youngsters, for indulging in anti-social activities.

SP Pushkar Karki, Kathmandu police chief, said it was the first time that the police had rounded up so many ‘Holi hooligans’. According to him, those found guilty of eve-teasing, and hurling water-filled balloons at pedestrians without their consent are in custody.

On-duty traffic cops deployed in major locations also arrested the revellers for rough driving, speeding, drunk-driving, and riding motorcycles without helmets.

Metropolitan Police Range Hanumandhoka and its units detained at least 957 miscreants and impounded more than 300 motorbikes, and two mini trucks.

Of the arrested, 511 were minors under the age of 16, and were released later. Around 1,500 additional security forces were deployed in the Kathmandu Valley to ensure the festival passes off peacefully.

Metropolitan Traffic Police Division had set up pickets in 115 places as a pre-emptive measure. Officials said those found guilty would be charged under the Public Offences Act.

Festival goes awry

KATHMANDU: Neha Lama (16) of Bouddha fainted after a water-filled balloon hurled by hooligans hit her in Chabahil. On-duty cops rushed her to nearby Om Hospital. She was discharged later. The police have arrested two persons in connection with the incident. Separately, Ram Chandra Bhulan (16), from Kusunti in Lalitpur- 13 broke his hands after he fell from a the two-storey house while celebrating the festival. He is

undergoing treatment at Alka Hospital.
