The photographs and other personal details of the shooter, Jagjit Singh and his two accomplices, Ram Duvedi and Suresh Duvedi, were displayed in a slide show presentation during a press meet organized at the MPCO. All three men are Indian nationals.

Singh hails from Sarojininagar in Lucknow city of Uttar Pradesh state of India. However, his two accomplices, who stayed outside the visitor room, fled the scene on a motorbike, according to police.

A notorious contract killer, Singh is found to have carried out high-profile killings in India also, informed Additional Inspector General (AIG) Arjun Jung Shahi during the press meet.

AIG Shahi further said that Singh, who entered the high security prison to meet convicted international criminal Charles Shobraj, was found to have hidden the weapon in a false pocket of his jacket close to his private parts. He also announced an award of Rs 50,000 for information leading to the arrest of Singh's two accomplices.

However, AIG Shahi refused to call the failure of prison guards to detect a gun even with a metal detector as "security lapse" and instead preferred to call it "security negligence". He said a pistol made in England and five rounds of ammunitions including the shell of the fired bullet was recovered from the site.

He also informed police constables Laxman Bhandari, Manoj Karki and Tilak Ram Chaudhari stationed for checking at the visitor room have been suspended following the shooting incident.

Ansari, who was shot in the shoulder, is currently undergoing treatment at Norvic Hospital, Thapathali. Sources at the hospital said that the bullet has been extracted from Ansari's body and he remains out of danger.

The shooter, who reached the jail to visit Ansari, opened fired at around 11:30 am inside the room where visitors meet prisoners.

According to the police, the shooter was immediately apprehended by security personnel after the failed attempt on Ansari's life. nepalnews.com
