Snow in hills‚ cold wave in Tarai‚ life hit

NEPALGUNJ: With snow falling across mountainous and hilly districts and the cold wave sweeping the Tarai belt, life has been hit hard.

While the districts of Jumla, Humla, Kalikot, Dolpa, Mugu, Darchula and Bajhang of mid and far-western regions received heavy snowfall, cold wave has affected life in Banke and Bardiya.

According to Mugu Assistant Chief District Officer Purna Neupane, two persons died of cold in Mugu on Saturday. Ratna Nepali died and an unidentified person died of cold on the Mugu-Jumla border, Neupane said.

Snow has blanketed entire mountainous region including Mugu district headquarters. Schools have been shut in the mountainous districts with excessive cold hitting students hard, said National Human Rights Commission Jumla Chief Bir Bahadur Magar.

Civil Aviation Authority, Nepalgunj, said flights to Mugu, Humla, Bajura, Rukum of the mid and far-west have been cancelled owing to snowfall and many passengers have been stranded. “Snowfall for the past three days has obstructed flights to Mugu and Humla,” Civil Aviation Authority Nepalgunj Chief Suresh Kumar Aajad informed.

Meanwhile, Banke and Bardiya districts have come under the grip of an unrelenting cold wave.

Banke recorded the lowest temperature, 11 degree Celsius today. People could be seen huddling around fires on the streets of Nepalgunj.
