Khanal slapper set free after public apology

ITAHARI: Devi Prasad Regmi, who was in police custody after slapping CPN-UML chairman Jhanalanath Khanal in public, during a programme in Inaruwa last week, has been released on Monday at around 5:00 pm.

The District Police Office (DPO), Sunsari, set him free after he confessed issuing a statement, to having done wrong and sought a public apology for his behaviour, according the DPO Sunsari.

In his statement, the 52-year-old former UML supporter said he slapped Khanal impulsively, but not for any concrete reason. Police released Regmi after UML chairman Khanal committed to excuse him, should he ask for an apology for his misbehaviour, it is said

Early in the day, his son Mahesh Regmi had filed a writ petition at the Itahari Appellate Court demanding the announcement of habeas corpus to free him, since his arrest on Friday.
