Water level in the reservoir of Kulekhani Hydro Electricity Project, popularly known as Indrarowar, has decreased in the recent months.
The higher consumption of water by the hydropower to meet the increasing demand of power, reduction in water level in its major water sources like rivers and melting of snow were cited as major reasons for the decline in the water level.
Due to delayed monsoon rainfall in the area the reservoir failed to collect adequate water this year.
The area even didn't receive rainfall and snowfall Sunday when it rained and snowed in many parts of the country including Kathmandu Valley.
Chief of Kulekhani Project Department Sachitananda Mishra said that the level of the water in the reservoir started decreasing owing to the fall in level of running water in rivers and the increasing dependence on the reservoir to manage the power supply.
The project that used to consume only two centimeters of water per day until a week ago was now consuming seven centimeters a day, he said.
These days the project has been producing power in the day time due to the increase in load shedding hours which resulted in the unprecedented decrease in the water level.
The hydropower produces 10 to 12 mega watt in the day time and as much as 92 mega watts in the night, which is its total production capacity, added Mishra.
The hydropower can make the use of water up to 483 meter from the mid sea level.
Kulekhani, the only water reserving hydropower in Nepal, has a capacity to produce 92,000 kilo watt of power.
