Wannabe docs paid upto Rs 2 m for 'IoM papers

KATHMANDU: Some aspirants of the MBBS course at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) revealed that they paid up to Rs 2 million to buy off the "question papers" of the entrance examinations, according to the police.

According to DSP Lalmani Acharya who is looking into suspected leakage of the IoM entrance papers leakage, two of the wannabe doctors told the admitted that their guardians spent Rs. 2 million each to buy the questions, while the third one said he paid Rs 1 million.

Acting on a tip off, police had raided a house in Setopul, Maitidevi area in downtown Kathmandu in the wee hours of yesterday morning to arrest 17 persons, including the trio.

According to the police, Dr. Prabhat Kumar Kuswaha and Prajjwal KC are the ring leaders. Both of them are at large.

Preliminary investigation suggested that KC was the person who collected cash from the entrants.

The police suspect that the duo would have dealt in question papers with many other aspiring doctors also.

Though 13 including the entrants and their guardians have already been released, four Indian nationals who were arrested from the house along with two pistols, two magazines and nine rounds of bullet have been kept in the custody. They are believed to be the partners of the absconding duo.

"The motive behind possessing the weapons may be either to secure question papers at gunpoint or issue threats to rival racket,” said DSP Acharya.

It has been learnt that the racket has been securing MBBS seats for the aspirants in Bangladesh and China.
