SHANGHAI, Oct 24: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a two-hour long meeting with Chinese officials Saturday at the state guest house in Shanghai where he is staying.
Dahal was accompanied by Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur but the other members of the Maoist team were conspicuously absent at the meeting.
Maoist politburo member Agni Prasad Sapkota and Dahal´s personal secretary Sameer Dahal are among members of the team.
Asked about the meeting, Mahara refused to talk about the contents and also did not disclose the identity of the Chinese officials.
The meeting was not in the original itinerary for the Maoist delegation prepared by the foreign department of the Shanghai municipal government. Dahal held the two-hour meeting that began from 2 p.m., canceling a pre-scheduled program to visit the Russian and German pavilions at Shanghai World Expo.
Earlier on Friday, a ministerial-level team from the Chinese government arrived in Shanghai to take Dahal to Beijing for political parleys.
The five-member team led by vice-minister level official at the Chinese Communist Party´s foreign relations department Hao Ping will be in Shanghai for two days before flying to Beijing on Sunday with the Maoist team.
Saturday´s meeting of top Chinese officials with Dahal was scheduled after Mahara held consultations with the Chinese team.
Dahal attended a dinner organized by the Nepal Pavillion after the meeting with Chinese officials. On the occasion, Dahal said that Nepal and China should work together to spread a new message in the world. “Nepal and China must join hearts, forging an emotional friendship to spread a new message of peace and prosperity to the world,” he added.
Vice chief of the Shanghai unit of the Chinese Communist Party´s foreign relation department Wong Siosu had welcomed Dahal upon his arrival at Pudong International Airport at 10:15 p.m. local time on Friday. Binod Bahadur Shrestha, Amrit Shakya and Binayak Shah of the Nepal Pavillion at Sanghai Expo were also present to welcome Dahal.
Dahal, who is on a five-day visit to China, is scheduled to observe Shanghai World Expo and take part in interactions on Saturday and Sunday.
He was scheduled to observe the pavillions of China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the US, Russia, Germany and Sri Lanka before flying to Beijing on Sunday evening.
Dahal took part in a meeting and lunch party organized by Sanghai municipal standing committee member Yong Siodu on Saturday afternoon.
On the occasion, Dahal reiterated that Nepal was serious over the security of China. “No foreign force will be allowed to conduct anti-Tibet activities from Nepali soil. There has also been talks with the government about this,” Mahara quoted Dahal as saying on the occasion.
