DoI faces torture slur over suicide

Himalayan News Service

KATHMANDU: A day after Balaram Chhetri committed suicide in the Department of Immigration, his kin have accused DoI officials of torturing him to death.

Chhetri (28), from Lekhnath- 15 of Kaski, had committed suicide by hanging himself with a muffler in the DoI detention centre after deportation from Sweden.

Keshav Bahadur Chhetri, the deceased's brother, said security officials at the centre were to blame for Balaram's death. "My brother killed himself because they had tortured him inhumanly," argued Keshav. He has lodged a complaint at Metropolitan Police Range demanding action against the guilty.

However, Shesh Narayan Paudel, an official at DoI, denied torturing him during the brief detention.

"Torture of any sort has no place in the detention cell as it is a purely civilian custody. The charge is baseless," he maintained. SP Ramesh Prasad Kharel, in-charge, MPR, confirmed it was a suicide case, saying that no injury was traced on the body. However, he censured the DoI officials' negligence. Two DoI security officials have been detained for investigation, said DSP Kedar Dhakal.
