Ransom paid, teenage abductee yet to be freed

BANKE: The whereabouts of Kapil Dwibedi, who was abducted along with his schoolmate Liladhar Bhatta on Thursday, is still unknown, though his family paid the ransom demanded by the abductors last night.

On Monday, police found Bhatta’s body in a paddy field near Nepalgunj.

Dwibedi family had paid Rs 1 million to the kidnappers to secure Kapil’s release. Superintendent of Police Mahesh Bikram Shah at Banke District Police Office said kidnappers had agreed on Rs 1 million though they had demanded Rs 5 millions from Dwibedi family for Kapil’s release.

According to Shah, police personnel were deployed in and around Nepalgunj to nab the abductors but they had to return after the kidnappers threatened to kill Kapil if police followed them.

“The kidnappers would often change the location to hand over the ransom,” added Shah. Though the kidnappers had initially called Dwibedi family at Tribhuvan chowk, they changed the location to Kohalpur. Later they refused to receive money even at Kohalpur. Dwibedi family finally handed over the ransom at Udharapur at around midnight.

Talking to The Himalayan Times, one of the family members who handed over ransom money to the abductors, said the kidnappers had assured them to release Kapil at 1 pm in Tribhuvan Chowk.

According to Shah, a large number of police personnel have been searching for Kapil. “Hundreds of police personnel have been mobilised in Nepalgunj and its adjoining areas,” Shah added. Liladhar was a tenth grader at Nepalgunj-based Jaya Bageswori Higher Secondary School while Kapil is a ninth grader at the same school.

Meanwhile, students, teachers, human rights activists, mediapersons and civil society today took out rallies in Nepalgunj protesting Liladhar’s death and sought Kapil’s release. Issuing separate press releases, Banke PABSON, student unions, teachers’ unions and political parties condemned Liladhar’s murder and pressed for safe release of Kapil.

Meanwhile, central chairman of Tarai Janatantrik Party Madhes Arjun Singh has stated through e- mail that his party had expelled TJPM Banke former in-charge Adarsha for his involvement in the murder of Liladhar and abduction of Kapil. The press release signed by chairman Singh states that the party had expelled party members Nijamuddin Nepali and Rengau Nepali for their involvement in the abduction and murder.
