HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE

KATHMANDU: Shree Panchami, the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, was today observed throughout the country. The day, which is also called Basanta Panchami, is believed to usher in the spring season.

Hindus believe that the deity rules the realm of speech, letters, arts and sciences. She is venerated by students, scholars, writers, poets, artists, musicians and weavers.

Schools and colleges in the country remained closed today after the government declared a holiday to celebrate the festival.

According to Hindu mythology, Saraswati is the daughter of Lord Shiva and Durga. A popular belief is that those who swallow seven rice grains offered to the goddess would be bestowed with knowledge and wisdom.

This is also the day in which children between the age of three and seven are taught their first alphabets. The day is also considered the most auspicious for couples to tie the knot. It is said that the couples who get married during the pious day would receive blessings of Goddess Saraswati.
