KATHMANDU: Newly elected Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal (61) took the oath of office and secrecy in a function organised at the President’s office in Shital Niwas, Kathmandu on Sunday.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly elected Prime Minister this evening.

Vice President Parmananda Jha, outgoing prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Constituent Assembly (CA) chairman Subhas Chandra Nembang, various political party leaders, chiefs of security bodies, heads of the government and international diplomatic representatives were present at the ceremony.

Jhalanath Khanal a CPN-UML nominee, was elected as the new Prime Mnister of Nepal during a Legislature-Parliamentary session of the Constitutent Assembly on Thursday after the UCPN-Maoist decided to cast its votes in favour of the CPN-UML after the party realised that Prachanda was likely to lose without the support of other major parties.

Meanwhile, the oath taking ceremony of the ministers has been postponed as the two parties UCPN-Maoist and CPN-UML could not forge an agreement regarding power sharing and formation of the new Council of Ministers.
