Prithvi Highway sees rise in accidents after scrapping of Time Card system

The number of accidents on the Prithvi Highway has increased after the Time Card system for the vehicle plying on the highway was done away with, national news agency RSS reported citing the data provided by the District Traffic Office, Tanahun.

The Time Card system was introduced on February 13, 2008 and it was removed on November 8, 2009.

In-charge at the District Traffic Office, Lok Bandhu Thapa told RSS the number of vehicular accidents on the highway had decreased following the enforcement of the time card system.

As per the time card system, the vehicles would be given time card and they had to reach the particular destination in the time mentioned on the time cards.

Thapa said this requirement ensured that the vehicles would try to maintain the time as mentioned in the time card and would not speed to overtake other vehicles to reach their destinations earlier.

He said the number of accidents has increased as there is a tendency not to obey the traffic rules.

Thapa is for imposing the time card system for minimizing accidents.

He did not say why the system was removed.

As per the data of the District Traffic Office, 48 persons were killed in 71 accidents that occurred on the highway in fiscal year 2008/09.

Similarly, 39 persons were killed in 55 accidents in fiscal year 2009/2010 and 64 persons in 138 accidents in fiscal year 2010/201. nepalnews.com
