Cabinet formation likely to further delayed

Cabinet formation is likely to be further delayed with both the CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist) sticking to their claim over the Home Ministry.

Despite the claims of senior leaders that a small cabinet comprising ministers from both the parties would be unveiled by today evening they failed to agree on the sharing of ministerial berths.

There were separate talks at different levels in the morning and the afternoon but the meetings remained inconclusive.

It is learnt that UCPN (Maoist) has been pressing the UML to accept Barshaman Pun for Home Minister while the UML leaders have been arguing that it would be convenient for the government to operate if their party holds the home ministry. The UML has unofficially named Bishnu Poudel as Home Minister.

Meanwhile, the standing committee meeting of the UCPN (Maoist) scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon has been postponed.

Maoist vice-chairman, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, informed Nepalnews that the meeting was deferred as most of the standing committee members were occupied in negotiations with UML leaders.

However, UCPN (Maoist) chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal said that the new cabinet would be announced "at the earliest".

According to Dahal, there are some differences between his party and the UML regarding the distribution of ministerial portfolios. However, he claimed the leaders would sort out those differences and announce the cabinet without any delay. nepalnews.com
