34 Nepali migrant workers stranded in Iraq

34 Nepali citizens taken to Iraq with assurance of work have been stranded after the agent who escorted them deserted them soon after reaching Iraq, Gorkhapatra daily reported.

The migrant workers stranded in the war-torn middle-east country soon after arriving there are in dire state as they are not even able return home as the agent has taken their passports with them, according to DP Pokhrel, kin of a stranded worker.

The migrant workers don’t even know the name of the manpower agency and the details of the agent who took them there, said Pokhrel, they just know they were taken there via Dubai by a person called Dev Dai.

Those stranded include Deependra Pokhrel and Aatmaram Pokhrel from Gulmi.

Foreign ministry officials said, they have not received any information about the stranded workers in Nepal and assured they will initiate rescue process after finding out about the stranded workers.

Iraq is not a legal destination for migrant workers from Nepal. However, brokers have been taking migrant workers from Nepal to Iraq with assurance of lucrative jobs. nepalnews.com
