DRI set to seek scrapping casino licenses

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Feb 11: The Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) is set to recommend to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) to scrap the operating licenses of eight casinos, if they fail to settle all their tax liabilities by Friday.

The DRI had issued a stern 35-day notice on January 9 to casinos that defaulted on royalty payment to clear their accumulated dues totalling Rs 300 million, and warning them of stringent action in case of non-compliance.

"We will wait till the end of office hours on Friday for those casinos to clear their dues. If they continue to ignore our call, we will immediately recommend to MoTCA to revoke their operating licenses by Friday evening," Mahesh Dahal, chief of DRI, told Republica on Thursday.

According to him, eight casinos out of the 10 operating in Kathmandu and Pokhara have full and partial tax liabilities amounting to Rs 300 million. Casino Everest and Casino Tara have cleared their dues. However, Casino Rad, Casino Venus, Casino Grand and Royal Casino still have partial dues whereas Casino Nepal, Casino Anna, Casino Shangri-La and Fulbari Casino haven´t cleared any tax liabilities at all so far.

Parliament´s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had instructed the government on December 28 to scrap the operating licenses of casinos found flouting existing laws. PAC issued further instructions last week urging the government to take immediate steps to cancel the operating licenses of casinos that fail to clear their dues on time.
