The newly-appointed secretary-general of the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed of Maldives, assumed office at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
Saeed, 30, who succeeded Dr Sheel Kanta Sharma of India, is the first female and youngest secretary-general of regional body to hold the position.
A former attorney general of Maldives, Saeed holds a Master’s Degree in Law from Japan.
The 33rd session of SAARC council of ministers held in Bhutanese capital Thimpu had last month appointed her to the post. She will have a tenure of three years. nepalnews.com
