Three companies get permission to export organic coffee

National Tea and Coffee Development Board (NTCDB) on Monday gave permission to three companies in the country to export organic coffee to the international market by providing them special trademark.

NTCDB distributed the authorized logo, ‘The Himalayan Specialty Nepal Coffee logo’ to three industries - Highland Coffee, Nepal Organic Coffee Product and Royal Everest Coffee Company.

Binay Kumar Mishra, executive director of NTCDB on Monday handed over the certificate of authorized logo to the three companies to use it while exporting organic coffee to the global market.

Mishra also believes that the recently registered trademark of Nepali organic coffee will help boost Nepali coffee in the international market.

The export of Nepali coffee has also recorded a sharp increase over the years. The total volume of exports stood at over 120,000 kg in the fiscal year 2009/10 from 24,000 kg in previous fiscal years.

Nepal had also imported coffee worth Rs 84.4 million in 2008/09 and worth Rs 54.2 million in 2009/10.

According to NTCDB, there is huge demand for Nepali coffee in the international market – somewhere around 3 million tons - while Nepal has only been able to export around 300 tons of coffee.

Nepal has been exporting the organic coffee to Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Belgium, UK, India, Singapore among others countries. nepalnews.com
