REPUBLICA
KATHMANDU, Aug 28: UCPN (Maoist) Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai outpolled Nepali Congress (NC) Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel by the margin of 105 votes to become the country’s new prime minister Sunday evening.
During the prime ministerial election held at the Legislature-Parliament today, Bhattarai polled in 340 votes, while his rival Paudel could muster only 235 votes. A total of 575 lawmakers were present in the voting.
Lawmakers from UCPN (Maoist) and United Democratic Madhesi Front, the alliance of five Madhes-based parties, among other parties voted for Bhattarai, whereas those from the NC, CPN-UML and some other fringe parties cast their vote in Paudel’s favor.
Today’s voting took place after the political parties earlier failed to form a consensus government within the 10-day deadline issued by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav after Jhalanath Khanal resigned as the prime minister on August 14.
