KATHMANDU: The inaugural session of Nepali Congress' 12th general convention kicked off on Friday with the party leaders serving reminders of the party's glorious past and urging all to strive for a return to greatness.

Senior Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the Nepali Congress (NC) had taken the leading role in the historic movements of 1950, 1990 and 2006.

He claimed that the party has to take the leadership to materialise the peace and constitution drafting processes.

He expressed his hope that the National General Convention would give new energy to the leadership.

"Nepal is a country for all the Janjatis, Adivasis, Madhesis, women, Dalits, differently abled and Muslims. We should not make any kind of disparity to anyone," said the former prime minister.

He acknowledged that the party was defeated during the Constituent Assembly's election and became the second largest party. However, he proclaimed that the party would be made the largest party in the future.

He also said that the party should consolidate the federal democratic setup of the nation so that nobody could dismantle it. He also stressed on the need to take the peace process to a logical end.

Likewise, concluding the inaugural session of the assembly, acting president Sushil Koirala said that NC is being run with the principles of the late B P Koirala.

Glorifying the history of the NC, Sushil said that the party would not compromise with the forces which are against the norms and values of the democracy.

"NC will not compromise with any forces against the human rights, people's rights, rule of law and press freedom. The party strives for a violence-free society", said Sushil.

He also repeated the words of previous speakers that the forces which were against the NC were defeated by the party. He said it was a matter of pride for the party to have done so.

He urged Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' to support the peace and constitution drafting processes holding the Maoists responsible for the stalemate.

The acting president also said that if the Maoists are ready to dismantle the paramilitary structure of the YCL, return the land and properties to the rightful owners and remove obstructions to the peace and constitution drafting processes, the NC is ready to accept Prachanda as the PM.

Remembering the late Girija Prasad Koirala, Sushil said that NC wants to move towards consensus, cooperation and reconciliation. He also said that the NC has entered into a new era in the issue of leadership as well.
