Bus kills kid, driver flung into river

SURKHET: Irate locals of Rakam village in Surkhet district thrashed a bus driver and flung him into the Bheri River after the bus he was driving crushed a three-year-old child to death on Monday. He has been missing since then.

Indira BC was killed when a bus en route to Jajarkot from Rakam ran over her. Bus conductor Dirgha told the police that infuriated locals thrashed Wakil Budhathoki and threw him into the Bheri River while the victim’s family and the Transport Entrepreneurs’ Committee were dwelling on compensation for the victim’s kin.

Surkhet Superintendent of Police Raju Manandhar said the police had arrested three locals and Dirgha. “Probe into the incident is underway,” said Manandhar. A police team led by Inspector Hari Oli from the Surkhet District Police Office has been deployed to the incident site. Police personnel have also been dispatched from Salyan district to search for the missing driver.

Transport workers, meanwhile, have brought the vehicular movement along Chhinchu-Jajarkot road section to a complete halt to protest locals’ highhandedness. Transport workers have filed a complaint against Chitra Bahadur KC and Okil Bista for their alleged involvement in the incident.

Accident victim’s body has been sent to Surkhet-based Regional Hospital in Kalagaun for post-mortem examination.
