Chinese delegation meets Maoist, NC leadership

KATHMANDU: The high-level Chinese delegation held separate meetings with the top leadership of the two major parties just after their arrival in Kathmandu on Saturday.

The 21-member delegation, led by He Yong, a vice-premier and secretary at the Secretariat of Central Committee of Communist Party of China (CPC), met with UCPN-Maoist leaders including Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress senior including acting President Sushil Koirala separately at a five-star hotel in the Capital this evening.

During an hour-long close-door meeting at Soaltee Crowne Plaza, the Maoist chairman stressed on the enhancement of the people-to-people relationship. He asked the Chinese delegates to increase the ties between the Nepali Maoist party and the CPC, according to UCPN-Maoist vice chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

Maoist chairman Dahal, three vice chairmen of the party—Mohan Baidhya, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and Shrestha-- the party’s foreign department chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Steering Committee member Dev Gurung took part in the meeting.

The meeting discussed the current political stalemate in the country, the ongoing peace process and the bilateral cooperation. The Maoist leadership assured the Chinese delegates that it is committed to the One China Policy, and assured them of not letting the Nepali soil to be used against China.

Neither Chinese delegates nor embassy staff in Kathmandu were available for the comment over the close-door talks.

After holding the meeting with the Maoist leadership, the Chinese team met with NC acting president Koirala, leaders Prakash Man Singh and Ramchandra Pokharel.

After the meeting, Koirala told media that the discussion centred on the peace process in the country and strengthening ties between the two parties.

“China stressed on their non-interference policy in Nepal’s internal matter and wished that the peace process completed soon,” Singh told THT Online.

Meanwhile, the Chinese leader invited both Dahal and Koirala to visit China at their convenient time.

The delegation is scheduled to meet President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Sunday morning, and CPM-UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal in the afternoon.

The delegation will return to China on September 16.
