Water projects suffer after ADB pullout

DADELDHURA, June 9: Drinking water projects worth millions of rupees in Dadeldhura are in a state of limbo after the Asian Development Bank (ADB) stopped its funding. “ADB stopped its funding three months ago,” confirmed Aatmaram Koirala, the chief of community drinking water unit.

ADB states that the works on the projects were not moving quickly and lack of transparency in its functioning as the reason of its decision.

Around a dozen of community-run drinking water projects have been cut off as a result of the ADB decision. Chamalek, Pali Bakaya, Dawali, Teamalkatte, Sadani, Salun, Malas, Guyala along with other community drinking water projects were under construction when the funds were stopped.

The discontinuation of funding has raised a question mark on the possible completion of the projects especially as the work of fitting of the water tanks, taps and pipes have yet to be completed. “Till date, Rs 150 million has been spent in the twelve projects,” said the employees of the Drinking Water Office.

More than a dozen of these projects which had been facing problems such as that of neglect ever since it set up its unit office are now in a dilemma with the loss of funding.

According to the locals, the projects have not been completed because of the unruliness of the organizations handling them.

“Since no officers came to the field to advise us the projects have not been successful,” said Anka Singh Dhami, a local social worker. “Since the partner organizations did not work properly it added to the problem,” said unit chief Koirala.
