Wife paid for the jal-break: Report

SURKHET, July 21: An investigation report on Surkhet jail-break incident in which two inmates had escaped last week through a hole made for the purpose in the jail´s boundary wall has blamed the wife of Bijay Bikram Shah, one of the two prisoners who escaped from the jail, to have paid Rs 50,000 to an outsider to break the compound wall so that her husband can escape from the jail.

Probe committee headed by Assistant Chief District Officer Hari Pyakurel in its report says Manisha, the wife of Bijay Bikram Shah, paid the money to an outsider by mortgaging her gold rings at a local jewellery shop.

She was asked to provide the money to him by Shah when they met a few days ago. Manisha has been arrested by police.

The outsider had visited Surkhet prison in the guise of a carpenter five days before the jail-break. He is believed to have inspected the place to find the right spot for the hole during that visit, states the report.

He had carried a bamboo ladder for Shah to cross over a new security wall. Shah, who was remanded on abduction charges, had escaped the jail along with Punna Bahadur Shahi, a rape convict, on July 12.

Meanwhile, on the basis of the findings of the report, Surkhet jail administration has filed cases against 11 persons, including police, watchman and Shah´s relatives, at the District Court of Surkhet.

The committee has also recommended that departmental action be taking against the jailer and 15 other policemen who were on duty at the time of the jail-break.
