HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE

ITAHARI: The highest water flow for this year was recorded in the Koshi River today.

According to Koshi Barrage Water Control division, the water flow was 202,000 cusec per second at 3:15 pm today in the river, the highest for the year.

Shambhu Basnet, SI at Koshi Barrage Police Post said, 28 of the 56 gates were opened after the highest water flow was recorded today. “The water flow has been increasing rapidly as the hilly part of the region has been receiving continuous downpour,” he said.

The water flow was 150,000 cusecs in the river till today morning, but it increased all of a sudden in the afternoon, SI Basnet said.

The water flow was 167,000 cusecs when the flood broke the dam at Pacchhim Kushawaha three years ago. Today’s water flow is 35,000 cusecs more than at that time.

The red light has been switched on at the barrage since 2:00 pm today after the water level increased all of a sudden. The light had been switched off some days ago. Barrage staff turned on the red light after the water flow crossed 150,000 cusecs .

An Indian official said technicians are ready at the spurs in Prakashpur, Rajabas and other places to prevent possible damage.

The local administration informed that it has increased patrolling on the river side keeping in view the danger that the dam couldbreak. Only one-way traffic is allowed on the bridge and vehicles are not allowed to stop on it.
