KATHMANDU, July 15: The prime minister has directed officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to actively lobby for getting Nepal elected as president of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2011 September-2012 September.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal issued the directive in the aftermath of the cabinet decision to file the candidature of Kul Chandra Gautam, former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF and Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, for the prestigious post.
On Thursday, the prime minister held a meeting with Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai and Joint Secretary Durga Prasad Bhattarai, who also heads the UN division at the foreign ministry, to discuss strategies to ensure Gautam´s victory.
Nepal will start lobbying after it formally informs the UN about Gautam´s candidature, said a foreign ministry source.
Qatar has already picked its incumbent ambassador to the United Nations for the post and started lobbing for support of the UN members. The election will be held in coming spring.
“It is not the candidacy of Gautam, it is the candidacy of Nepal for prestige,” a participant of the meeting quoted the prime minister as saying foreign ministry officials, “So we should strongly lobby for support of UN members for Gautam.”
